Temescal Valley History
This area, originally called Rancho Temescal and known today as the Temescal Valley, is rich with history, having thrived through California's colorful beginnings in the 1800's during the mission, pastoral and Mexican periods.
Transportation played an important part in the development and accessibility of Rancho Temescal. In the late 1800's transportation evolved from the Butterfield Overland Mail Company's concord coaches led by horse and mule teams to the new frontier of railroads. The California Southern Railway provided the first rail service in the area, running trains between San Diego and San Bernardino via Temecula and Riverside through Temescal Valley.
Railroads transformed the area as well as many industries. In particular, railroads made lumber very affordable and easily available. Thus began the change in home construction patterns from traditional adobe to wood frame. This advancement was the primary impetus leading to a large migration of homesteaders to the Temescal Valley. Bringing with them citrus seeds, these homesteaders started small farms and ranches, transforming the countryside and the fertile, water-rich valley from a cattle and sheep-grazing economy to one of horticulture. Thus, the area's citrus industry was born. This boom in citrus groves lead to Corona's being called the Lemon Capital of the World.
At the turn of the 20th century, another industry emerged with the discovery of an array of natural resources and raw materials such as clay, rock, gravel and silica. Since the early 1900s, silica sand was mined at the Dos Lagos site and turned into glass for a variety of uses.
Rich with history, natural resources and people with ingenuity and ambition, the Temescal Valley has emerged as a dynamic and naturally beautiful place to live.
